Bible Study Websites

There are a number of websites available that allow one to read and study the Bible with an assortment of free resources. I’ve listed below a small number of them with which I am familiar. They are in the order of my own assessment of their general quality and usefulness.

As these are free websites, users should be aware that the resources that they offer are generally not very high quality. Often, they are older and therefore available in the public domain. As such, they do not reflect current research.

STEP Bible

  • Description from the website:
“STEP stands for ‘Scripture Tools for Every Person’ and is designed to give users across the world, particularly those in disadvantaged countries, free access to trustworthy Bible expertise. Created by Bible scholars at Tyndale House, Cambridge, UK, it is curated by a non-denominational body of scholars and other volunteers who are passionate about sharing accurate information on the Bible.”
  • This website is my top recommendation for studying the Bible.

Bible Gateway

  • Description from the website:
“Bible Gateway is a searchable online Bible tool hosting more than 200 versions of the Bible in over 70 languages that you can freely read, research, and reference anywhere. Including a library of audio Bibles, mobile apps, devotionals, email newsletters, and other free resources, Bible Gateway equips you not only to read the Bible, but to understand it.”
  • The primary usefulness of Bible Gateway is the abundance of translations available (far more than other options listed here). Beyond that, it has relatively few resources (unless you purchase Bible Gateway Plus for a monthly fee).

Blue Letter Bible

  • Description from the website:
“Blue Letter Bible provides powerful tools for an in-depth study of God’s Word through our free online reference library, with study tools that are grounded in the historical, conservative Christian faith.”
  • After STEP Bible, above, this is my favorite website for studying the Bible.

Bible Hub

  • Description from the website:
    Our mission
    1) Increase the visibility and accessibility of the Scriptures online.
    2) Provide free access to Bible study tools in many languages.
    3) Promote the Gospel of Christ through the learning, study and application of God’s word.
    Our Organization
Bible hub is a production of the Online Parallel Bible Project. This project is privately owned and supported for the express purpose of sharing Bible study tools online. Most of our work is done by volunteers with an interest in using their technological skills to this end. Please see our contact page for additional information.”
  • Bible Hub is similar to Blue Letter Bible in terms of resources.
